Animation of monthly global wind speed
Global Wind Speed This animation gives monthly wind speed values. It is based on satellite data, the only source of wind speeds over the open ocean.
Note that winds are stronger during each hemisphere's winter, with the Indian Ocean region corresponding to the Southern Hemisphere.
Although this methodology does not accurately represent wind speeds over land, we note that
wind speeds over water are much greater, and that terrestrial winds are typically high in large mid-contintenal plains.
The quicktime movie is from NASA Visble Earth, and specifically can be found at the
"Global Wind Speed" page.
