Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship

University of Delaware graduate Patrick Moran (seated) gained valuable experience working at the National Marine Fisheries Service on international fisheries issues as a National Sea Grant Fellow.

The National Sea Grant College Program in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, annually sponsors a special graduate education program that is endorsed by Congress.

The Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship matches highly qualified graduate students with host agencies in the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. The students benefit from a unique, year-long educational experience working on marine and coastal issues on Capitol Hill.

Interested students should discuss the fellowship with their local Sea Grant Program director. Applications must be submitted to the local Sea Grant program by the deadline set in the announcement (usually early to mid-April). Selected applications are then forwarded on to the National Sea Grant Office. The competitive selection process and subsequent notification to the Sea Grant programs is completed in June.

Paul R. Austin Sea Grant Fellowship

Dr. Paul R. Austin

At the University of Delaware's Honors Day, the Paul R. Austin Sea Grant Fellowship is awarded to a worthy student from the College of Marine and Earth Studies on the basis of academic and research excellence in biochemistry. The fellowship has been funded by the licensing fees from the late Paul Austin's Sea Grant patents relating to chitin, a compound in the shells of crabs and other marine life. Austin conducted pioneering research on chitin that led to its transformation into absorbable sutures and other products.

NOAA Coastal Management Fellowship Program

The Coastal Management Fellowship was established in 1996 to provide on-the-job education and training opportunities in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students and to provide project assistance to state coastal zone management programs. The program matches postgraduate students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by the state and selected by the fellowship sponsor, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center. This two-year opportunity offers a competitive salary, medical benefits, and travel and relocation expense reimbursement. internships at participating NMFS Science Centers or Laboratories under the guidance of NMFS mentors.
