Alvin's Porthole

Anchors away for the Alvin!

Success! The Large Volume Water Sampler (LVWS) was dropped into the ocean last night. Transponders keep Atlantis aware of its location. When Alvin dives, it goes to the LVWS, grabs onto its cable, and moves it to the desired location.

Sea Flicks

The fish pictured here is called a rattail, a common deep-sea fish. Dr. Horst Felbeck explained that this video has been sped up a bit. "Typically, this fish looks like it's swimming in slow motion," he said.

An octopus on the move is pictured here. Note that there are two laser points that appear in the video. Designed by the Alvin team, these points are used as a scale so the scientists sitting inside the sphere have a sense of how big things are outside. The two laser points are exactly 10 cm apart.
