Alvin's Porthole

 

Anchors away for the Alvin!

These animations show the Large Volume Water Sampler (LVWS) being retrieved. The float and transponder package are being retrieved in the illustration above. On the right, the elevator platform is being used to remove the LVWS. Those big boxes contain the bags of collected water from 2,500 meters below the surface.

 


Sea Flicks

Is that a giant lipstick? No, it's the tubeworm, Riftia pachyptila. The red plumes are actually the tubeworm's breathing apparatus.

 

Watch Alvin's manipulator in action as it grabs a handful of Alvinella to deposit in the Artie.
