Watch at right as Michelle dons a survival suit, commonly called a Gumby suit! This suit is critical in preventing hypothermia, a condition where the body core temperature drops severely. This safety equipment is mandatory on an ocean-going vessel.

This clip shows the Atlantis crew positioning the CTD, a piece of equipment used to measure conductivity, temperature, and density of water. The CTD allows scientists to gather information about the water's physical properties at any depth they'd like. The CTD also gathers water samples in the bottles you'll see at the end of the clip, and these are brought back onboard for further examination.

Here, Ky Hacker shows the proper method to store a survival suit. The survival suit, or Gumby suit, is an extremely important piece of survival gear in case the scientists and crew need to evacuate the ship. It is important that the suit be stored in a certain way, so that if an emergency arises, the suit is ready to go. "Always be prepared" is a motto shared by the scientists (concerning the lab) and the crew (concerning Atlantis).
