1416    Submersible in water

1440    Fired sipper #12 twice (#12 had no syringe, needed to fire twice since first time it had to register)            

1442    ICL checked. Not sure if ICL was calibrated?! Window temp reading 2 °C

1446    Video system queued and running; camera usage reviewed

1517    Lights on 2219 m. Frame grabber doesn’t seem to be working.

1528    Touch down right on the top of LVWS. Coming in close to elevator.

1530    The pump appears to be turned on perhaps when it was launched.

1537    Phone patch tested. Not exactly great connection.

1540    Frame grabber connector came out while descending. Bridge contacted. Problem has been solved.

1545    Picked up LVWS to move to BioVent.

1602    Arrival at BioVent

        We’re trying to figure out how to position the LVWS so that we can work here too.  

1607    HiT probe about 12 °C second position 40–55 °C (1609GMT) Second location selected to place LVWS funnel. Note: While positioning the funnel, the hose broke.

1622    LVWS was repositioned up highr on Alvinella mound.

1626    Large fish on port video. Slick fish indeed!

1632    HiT reads ~ 16 °C. More probing showed max. read of 78 °C

1643    Sipper #1 in.

1648    Pumping sipper #1 The first hole just up 4 cm was only ~10 °C. 2nd hole much hotter. Many worms came out of original hole.

1652    Sipper #2 fired into the same hole. Details on Sipper Data Sheet.

1657    Sipper #3 in.

1701     Sipper #3 fired.

1703    Sipper #4 in.

1718    Sipper #6 in. Pump on.

1727    Sipper #6 fired. First fire didn’t work so PC had to be rebooted. 

1729     Pumped for one minute. Temperature probing.

1732    Sipper #7 fired.

1733    Sipper 8 in. Pump on.

1737    Sipper #8 fired.

1803    332C read. Appears too hot to put frying pane.

1806    Went to pick up LVWS funnel.

1808    Got the LVWS funnel. We’re off to Tica for Riftia.

1813    Over side of BioVent looking for place to deploy prototraps bacterial mats on side of vent – difficult to get the trap on. However, there are mats over the mussel fields. Astrid approved it. We’re off to marker #1.

1817    Near marker #1.

1818    Deployed prototrap “B”. We’re 10m south of smoker at BioVent. Digital picture  taken right beside the marker.

1824    We were going to put it upon a basalt ledge that does have a few serpulids but it was within eyesight of the other trap.

1825    Took two digital pictures. Prototrap “I”.

1844    Passed by Q Vent. Stopped here to change the scrubber. CO2 level at 1.5. Grabber used to check this reading. 1.5 it is.

1848    Scrubber changed. Nice video of smoker cranking at the port side.

1852    We’re at the other side of Q vent. Pat says vent has grown noticeably in two weeks.

1856    Alvinella Stump (New Vent)

1858    Taking T – HiT to check whether we can deploy frying pan (readout ~250 °C).

        There’s hole in the middle of stump. Tried to grab sulfide but were’t able to.

  • 216, 239, 108, 188 °C in the frying pan. Piece of sulfide in front of biobox. Sulfide 
    from up to right of frying pan. A picture might have been taken – try finding it.

1905    Heading to Tica.

1936    Collected Riftia at Tica into Alvin’s biobox.

1939    Overlay off. Nice fish at port side. Took two digital pictures of Riftia mound.

1942    Done at Tica. Headed to TY and Io Vent.

2002    Arrived at Alvinella pillar. Some current here. Moved further.

2013    ICL first tube – cool one (15, 28, 34 °C) Worm in tube.

2015    2nd hole probed with ICL (30, 35, 37, 38 °C – 16 out).

2016    3rd hole ICL – 14.6 C

2018    4th hole ICL – (19.1, 23, 40, 39, 49, 51, 54, 55, 47 °C).

2022    Sipper #9 in. Pump on.

2029    Sipper #9 readjusted.

2034    Pump on for sipper #9.

2048    Sipper #9 fired. Note: Read data sheet for details. Experience problems while firing. PC had to be rebooted. Sipper electronics reset after PC was up. Problem solved this way.

2052    Sipper #10. Pump on.

2053    Sipper #10 fired.

2058    Sipper #11 in. Pump on.

2059    Sipper #11 fired.

2113    Picking up piece of basalt in big biobox.
