Dive Log

Dive Number: 4072
December 12, 2004

Pilot: Tony Tarantino
Port Observer: Frank Stewart
Starboard Observer: Shellie Bench

Timeline:

13:56 (GMT) Sub in water; many little jellyfish

14:01-15:26 Dive check digital voice recorder, stow until later; bioluminescence throughout column

15:26 Sub at bottom; touch down in axial summit caldera (ASC) near East Wall; turn south and head towards mussel bed; lots of dead mussels

            X4456            Y78439          Z2498              +100

15:46 Arrive East Wall

            X4554            Y78430          +193

15:53-16:00 Collect Riftia pachyptila for Horst: ~10-15 worms; Riftia clump surrounded by dense beds of mussels covering > 10 square meters

            X4562            Y78419          +28

16:06 Begin transit south to look for Michael's marker

16:10 Locate marker, collect and place on basket

            X4579            Y78432

16:15 Begin transit north through Axial Summit Caldera to Michael's Vent; lots of topography (collapsed basalt,  many small canyons, pillars)

16:50 Arrive at Michael's Vent; small clumps of Riftia

            X4421            Y78734          Z2507              +24

16:53 Deploy marker; film deployment (no image of marker front)

            X4423            Y78740

16:57 Begin search for Prototrap A

17:09-17:12 Find and recover Prototrap A; stop during process to take photo of Michael's marker, capturing inscription on front

            X4432            Y78734          +207

17:13 Begin transit north to Q Vent in search of frying pan

17:15 Switch tapes in port/starboard camera recorders

17:23-17:39 Locate and recover frying pan; during initial recovery event, sub nudges Q vent, causing a small chunk of the chimney near the frying pan to crumble and opening up a larger orifice (spewing smoker effluent); frying pan is knocked loose and tumbles to base of chimney; some sample is clearly lost; due to plume of smoke hindering view, pilot repositions sub and recovers remainder of frying pan from chimney base

            X4415            Y78817

17:37-17:39 Sub HiT probe used to take temp measurements in region of chimney where pan was located prior to being dislodged; temps: 325 °C (in orifice), 325 °C (possible location of fry pan diffuser), 180 °C and 220 °C (periphery of orifice)

            X4416            Y78804

17:40 Begin transit north to M Vent

17:46 Arrive at M Vent; begin set-up for Sipper work at Alvinella mound

            X4411            Y78904          +305

17:46-19:16 collect Sipper water samples; 10 Alvinella tubes sampled (i.e., 10 sippers); tube temps range from 23 °C to 119 °C (average temps between 35-55 °C)

**Sipper took a long time to fire

19:20 Begin Alvinella worm collection using ARTY chambers; sample from same vicinity (~0.5 m2 patch) as targeted for sipper collection

19:20-19:30 Place ~ 5 worms in Chamber 1; difficult to see exact number

19:32-19:53 Place ~ 5 worms in Chamber 2

19:48-19:53 Grab Alvinella clumps (three small ones from same area), and place in biobox

19:55 Begin transit NW to Biovent

20:03 Change CO2 scrubber in sub

20:09 Arrive at Biovent, and begin search for prototraps
