A deep-sea octopus is caught on tape hiding in a clump of Riftia.

Anthony scrubs down one side of Alvin, while he and Brian sing “…At the Subwash…oh, oh, oh, oh, oh…Subwash, yeah!” (To the tune of the 70’s song “Carwash”).

After two attempts to collect columns of sulfide to bring back to the surface, Alvin is left “empty-handed.” The material is soft and difficult to handle with Alvin’s manipulator.

Check out these photos, which have been transmitted to the University of Delaware from the R/V Atlantis.

Joe sees Alison off before her second dive of the cruise. You can tell they have a great working relationship!

I finally got a good look at a turtle, one of several that have surfaced near the ship since the start of the cruise.

This seagull has been hitching a ride on the back deck for the whole week.

Tara gives the final science seminar of the expedition, and she uses props throughout.

Alvin’s basket is full of samples from the last dive of the year!

With the final recovery complete, the Alvin group gathers for the “skin party,” which is the stripping and cleaning of the sub. Notice all the buckets, brushes, and hoses nearby.

Alvin’s skin gets peeled away, piece by piece, from each side of the sub.

The skin is laid out on deck for washing.

Alvin’s insides are exposed!

A closer look at one of the panels.

The titanium hull Alvin, where the pilot and observers sit and look through the portholes.

Mark stands atop the sub after he finishes his cleaning detail.

Craig found an old version of the Sipper we have been using during the cruise.
