Check out these photos, which have been transmitted to the University of Delaware from the R/V Atlantis.

The amaryllis blooms in top lab, seeming only a dying bud days before.

Craig and George laugh after I point out that they are dressed alike. We were all in Top Lab of Atlantis waiting for the questions to Alvin to be completed during today’s Phone Call to the Deep.

An amazing close-up shot of tubeworms taken during today’s dive.

A deep-sea fish camouflages itself among the tubeworms.

A wand is used to measure the temperature of the hot water spewing from a vent.

The AIS InsECT is redeployed today.

The InsECT probes are repositioned inside the tubes of Riftia to gather more data regarding the chemical environment to which the worms are directly exposed.

Traps are used to collect several deep-sea crabs.

Bruce is proudly sporting his WHOI (for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) hat to stay warm while in the sub.

Dr. Don Nuzzio celebrates his birthday 2,500 meters deep!

The sun is close to setting as Alvin is recovered from the amazingly calm waters. That’s a silhouette of Jerry (Able Bodied Seaman) on top of the sub.

Another newbie — Irene Garcia — takes a dunk!

A cluster of huge tubeworms (Riftia) is brought from the depths!
