Arrived on the bottom at 15:28, attempted to set up for Sipper sampling, unsuccessful. 16:32 - 4675 77622 — Started working on vent at Ty/Io, sampled with high-T probe in several positions, found max T of 316C. Took several pictures, 3-chip video, hi-def video. 16:56 — Tried to go around to other side, looking for a good place to put ASU sampler. 17:07 4674 77620 — Collected chimney sample from this vent which registered 316°C and then positioned the ASU unit over the plume. The HOBO sampler which was there on arrival had been placed in this same vent, but sulfide had accumulated around it which made it impossible to see until we pulled said chimney apart. Bruce replaced the HOBO sampler in its original position and placed ASU unit appropriately. Temperature measured at the top of the ASU unit after emplacement was 40°C. Took 3-chip video and pics of emplacement. Positioned macro wand above plume above ASU unit and measured high HS- and FeS (several spots through plume about 1 foot away from orifice up to 55°C). 18:07 4688 77642 — At other chimney in Ty/Io, sampled another piece of the chimney and took temperatures with high-T thermistor. Positioned wand above plume orifice again and took several samples high HS- and FeS. 19:01 4599 77973 — At Bio9 site, collected 3 fries, deployed 2. Used macro wand and did several crude profiles from close to seafloor to about 1 foot above to define anoxic, low HS- environment (dynamic - significant mixing and chemical heterogeneity from flow). 19:47 4603 77973 — At Bio9 site close to previously placed fries, placed 2 more fries in area of white floc. Used wand to attempt another crude profile, found higher HS- in another dynamic environment. 20:11 4562 78154 — Tico site, placed Shank basalt blocks in middle of Riftia field. Used macro wand and placed electrodes in a number of places near the Riftia. Showed a wide range of chemical conditions with very heterogeneous chemical distribution — HS- concentrations had a wide range. 20:44 4708 78145 Recovery of fries off-axis from Tico. 21:14 4564 78168 Returned to Tico after deciding there was enough power for a couple more electrochemical measurements. Positioned the sub in main part of vent near small Alvinella and made a few scans in the flow there — lots of sulfide. Note: Quantifying electrochemical data will be done ASAP (computer being used to set up deployable tonight and will go in Alvin tomorrow), but is not available 12/03/03. |
