Dive Number: 3959
December 19, 2003

Pilot: Bruce Strickrott
Port Observer: Alison Murray
Starboard Observer: Liz McCliment

Summary:
Temperature and sipper surveys at Parigo.
Alvinella pompejana (6) collected into Chamber 1 using slurp gun.
Temperature and sipper surveys at Grandbonum.
Alvinella pompejana (9) collected into Chamber 3 using slurp gun.
Several clusters of Alvinella pompejana deposited into the small biobox.
Riftia collected into big biobox (~10).
Dropped to the bottom and collected basalt.

* Experiment with bubble in graduated cylinder happened before we could watch it — right after we were launched.
* Experiment with nickel and penny was not performed.

**Tested DLK on descent; Serial port time out error, Liz talked with Don to troubleshoot.
** Note: there are no DANCAM images for this dive. In the future, observers should have a checklist to go over with the pilot.

1410 Initiated descent.

1524 Framegrabber turned on.

1536 Sub reached bottom, 2625 m. Headed to Parigo; setting indicated it was 100 m away.

1550-1620 Troubleshooting DLK system — rebooting after cycling sub power.

1619 Arrived Parigo (following a detour to Genesis at 1606). Appeared as two pillars, one tall and one short. Small orange marker “73.” X 4678.7, Y 6668.9, 2621 m; Heading 74; Altitude 3.7.

1628 Ground on port Manipulator (though there was none noticed on the descent, checked by Bruce a couple of times).

1633 Started surveying temperatures using the HiT probe.

1637 Tube 1: 19–24°C.

1641 Tube 2 (note worm was in tube): 55–65°C.

1643 Tube 3 35–39°C.

1644 Tube 4 (note worm was in tube): 29–48°C. * 3 Chip video taken; * DLK was not working — no ECHEM

1649 Attempting to use the Port arm — current was monitored by Liz. Sipper wand placed in Tube 1 from above. Temperatures 66–72°C; SIPPER 1 fired at 1652.

1652 Tube 2 (worm in tube) — Temperatures 47–71°C; SIPPER 2 fired at 1653, noted temperatures as high as 90.5°C while sipping.

1654 Tube 3 Temps 35–43°C. SIPPER 3 fired at 1655; temps were dropping while sipping.

1656 Tube 4 Temps 59–67°C. SIPPER 4 fired at 1657; temps of 55 noted while sipping.

1702-20 Used port manipulator to disturb the colony. Slurped 5–6 Alvinella in vicinity of sipping locations, as well as below the sipping location — not targeting specific holes. Worms placed into Chamber 1. Digital stills taken. Confirmed RNA Later coming out of the vent @ 1724.

Looked for Tevnia, though didn’t see any. Pilot noticed that video camera had stopped recording at 1739; we think we missed less than 5 minutes.

Transit to Granbonum — we performed three search patterns en route. Difficult to locate with the bottom topology consisting of tall walls of basalt.

1830 Arrived at Granbonum X 4742.2 Y 7027.0. Located pillar with Sonar. Depth 2571; Alt 1.7; Heading 076. Observed two small pillars at the bottom with Alvinella, then an approximately 25 m tall pillar that bifurcated at the top — where there was another Alvinella colony on the left, then the main pillar went up about another 5–8 m. Behind the Alvinella colony, the large pillar was completely orange with iron oxidation. At the top, there was a second Alvinella clump (sampled the previous day). The big pillar was approx. 6 m wide. Note that due to long transit, we were quite low on power.
* Note that Liz got the DLK working, but electrodes were corroded and not usable.

1847 Probed the Alvinella cluster with the Hi-T probe.
Tube 1 temps: 38–85°C
Tube 2 temps: 52–88°C
Tube 3 temps: 82–106°C

1851 Placed Sipper wand in tube. Temps 48–56°C. SIPPER 5 fired at 1852. Temps of 49°C noted.

1853 Tube 2 Temps: 37–49°C. SIPPER 6 fired at 1856. Temps dropped to 32°C.

1857 Tube 3 Temps: 82–109°C. SIPPER 7 fired at 1859.

1900 Tube 4 Temps: 69–75°C. SIPPER 8 fired at 1901.

1902 Tube 5 Temps 36–52°C. SIPPER 9 fired at 1904. Note Sipper locations on sketch in middle section of the cluster.

1908 Using slurp gun to collect Alvinella. Strategy used port manip to disupt the tubes, then slurp worms when they came out of the tubes. Large worms observed. Nine worms collected into Chamber 3. RNA Later confirmed venting @ 1925.

1927-42 Collected clump of Alvinella; placed into forward biobox.

1944 Sipper wand into tube in center of area Alvinella were collected (post-sampling). Temps 39–58°C. SIPPER 10 fired at 1945. Note that the power to the pump was not turned on!

1950 Moved sub around to the big pillar to collect Riftia at approximately same depth. X 4752.8, Y 7020.3; Depth 2570; Altitude 2.2; Heading 22.

Approximately 10 Riftia were collected into the large biobox. No living Tevnia were observed, though Bruce noted that he did see a small cluster of dead Tevnia.

Very low on power, so no 3-chip. Starboard cam on biobox, port cam on cluster of Riftia.

2009 Dropped to bottom to collect Basalt. X 4737.2, Y 6988.4; Depth 2590 m; Heading 197.
Out of power 20:12; dropped weights to surface. Surfaced at 2150.
