Starboard Observer: Don Nuzzio

15:43 Commencing Dive

16:36 Electrical problem in ball. It resolved itself, and the dive proceeded without incident.

16:58 On bottom 2505 meters. Proceeding to M vent -- brittle stars and shrimp observed on basalt.

17:20 Arrived at M vent, x = 4450 / y = 78973, heading 275, depth: 2503 meters. No black smokers observed. Clear and some colored water observed.

17:32 Position 1 at M vent -- great 3-chip video of Alvinella worm in hole.

17:34 Position 1 at M vent (in Alvinella tube) -- Temperatures recorded at this time were 40°, 43°, 39°, 43°C, respectively; electrode number 1 used in the Alvinella Wand. Sipper samples 1 and 2 taken, 3 digital stills and HDV and DV recorded at this site. Electrochemistry scans 3942.000 to 3942.038 taken at this first Alvinella tube.

17:39 Temperatures taken again in the area of the first worm tube, 41°-45°C recorded. Electrochemistry performed to determine method for low and high concentration sulfide.

17:48 Position 2 at M vent (In Alvinella tube) -- Temperatures recorded from 39°, 45°, 50°C. Electrochemistry performed cyclic voltammetry scans 3942.039 to 044. Performed square wave voltammetry scan 3942. 045 050. Continued cyclic voltammetry scans 3942.051-062. Testing flow cell pump, Sipper sample taken #3.

18:00 Heading to Robins Nest performing cleaning scans on all electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry performed from 3942.063 074.

18:08 Arrived at Robins Nest, x = 4442 / y = 78972, heading 205, depth 2507 m, alt. 5.7 m. Probing worm tube temps from 48° to 50°C at position 1, Sipper # 6 taken with HD and DV video and digital photos. Some black smoke noted at this site.

18:16 Temperature probed 10° to 25°C. Voltammetric scan numbers from 3942.076 108. Sipper samples taken #7 and #8. Beware of the pump switch being on or off!!

18:19 Probing temperatures at position#2, low temps recorded 15° to 18°C.

18:20 At position #3 at Robins Nest, low temps again recorded 25° to 20°C.

18:22 At position #4 at Robins Nest, temps recorded 26° to 27°C.

18:29 Arrived at Q Vent, x = 2504 / y = 78869, heading 132, depth 2504 m, altitude 7.2 m. Good smokers at Q vent.

18:45 Position #1 at Q Vent, probing temperature 67°,70°,69°C. Electrochemistry scans from 3942.112 to 138. DV and HD video and digital stills taken, Sipper sample taken #9. Scans from 3942.139 to 143 run on electrode #2 in flow cell.

18:51 Position#2 at Q Vent, temps recorded from 65° to 70°C. Electrochemical scan #’s from 3942.151 to 164. Sipper sample taken #10. ( Note: X-5 small Alvinella, Q vent several pots for ASV deployment, QVent not many large Alvinella worms.)

19:00 Heading to Bio Vent.

19:05 Riftia field dead x = 4477 / y = 78803, depth 2506 m.

19:15 Mussel bed x= 4602 / y = 78593 depth 2501 m.

19:25 East wall x= 4622 / y = 78494 depth 2502 m.

19:40 At Tica site x = 4580 / y = 78181 depth 2511m.

19:48 Position #1 at Tica, pick and deploying Cavanaugh samples. Deployed fries #39 and 40 in Riftia clump x= 4590 y = 78188 heading 048. Pan-and-tilt camera images recorded for these pickups and deployments.

19:54 Position # 2 at Tica, deployed fries # 41 and 42 outside of clump, x= 4595 / y = 78187.

19:59 Position # 3, repositioned into clump #39.

20:01 Position #4, picked up #10 and #13 fries, x = 4589 / y = 78165, front basket.

20:08 Position # 5, sample # 36 collected, x = 4591 / y = 78176, middle basket location.

20:15 - 20:19 Position # 6 deployment of # 45 and # 46, middle basket x = 4617 / y = 78166.

20:20 Peripheral deployment of #7 and # 27 back basket location, x = 4618 / y = 78165, depth 2502 m heading 084, Altitude 2.0.

20:27 Off axis Cavanaugh site x = 4728 / y = 78160, depth 2504 m heading 113, altitude 0.9. Deployment of # 43 and # 44.

20:30 Went back to position 1 to collect sample #35, put in middle basket. This sample came with a bunch of Riftia.
