Check out these photos, which have been transmitted to the University of Delaware from the R/V Atlantis.

BWI Airport

This is a shot of Gavin, a member of the Alvin Group, on Alvin after it returned from its dive. When Alvin surfaces, two of the Alvin group act as "swimmers" and are transported via zodiac (an inflatable boat) to the sub. They climb up on the sub and help coordinate its lift via the A-frame back onto the ship.

Once the captain correctly positions Atlantis, the swimmers hook the A-frame to the sub, and it is lifted back onto the ship as shown here.

During the deployment and retrieval of the sub, some of the Alvin group is up on the bridge. Here, one of the pilots, Bruce, is watching the retrieval from the bridge.

After his dive, Dr. Craig Cary stretches out on the plank next to Alvin.

When someone has their first Alvin dive, they go through a little "initiation." Here, Hugh Morgan, one of the scientists on board, gets ice water dumped on him upon his exit from the sub. LOTS of ice water!

BWI Airport
Even soaking him with 15 gallons of ice water can’t erase the smile off Hugh’s face from the thrill of his first Alvin dive.

While Alvin is down, the scientists on board still have lots of work! Here, some of the Alvin group and some of the scientists prepare the "elevator" for deployment.

After Alvin is retrieved and placed back in the hangar, eager scientists collect their samples from the basket. Here, Julie Robidart and Barb Campbell wait to collect their samples.

A shot of one of the samples from the first Alvin dive (dive 3828). It is a piece of a chimney from one of the vents.

A shot of Gavin on the sub. The shot actually isn’t blurry. It’s from water on the camera. Photo by Mark Spear.

Another great photo. This one is a picture of Gavin in the zodiac with Atlantis right behind him. Photo by Mark Spear.

In this picture, it looks like the sub is just surfacing, but in fact, a large swell is covering most of the sub. Photo by Mark Spear.
