|
| Because
we had an extra day in port, Hepsi and Jen had the opportunity to
take more photos of Atlantis from the dock of the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. |
|
Here's
a view of the stern. You can see Alvin peeking out of its
hangar.
|
|
| This
is a view of the harbor from the dock with a pleasure boat coming
along side for an inspection. |
|
| Alvin
lives in its hangar when its not in use. The Alvin
crew is working on periodic maintainence while were cruising
to the dive site. |

|
The Port of San Diego is home to research vessels, the Navy, and
the Coast Guard. At any given time, you can look out in the harbor
and see other large vessels steaming out to sea.

|
It takes real teamwork (and balance!) to fix such a large piece of
equipment as the A-frame. We watched these guys drill, weld, and work
all day to get the A-frame in working condition. |

|
Hepsi Zsoldos takes a moment to call her class at Talley Middle School
in Wilmington, Delaware, just before the boat sailed on Monday. |
|
| This
is the view from the first deck above the bow as we left port. The
channel out to sea is directly in front of the boat.

|
|
The scientists were lucky to not have to help with lines so we
could take lots of cool pictures. The crew, however, had to handle
the lines as we shoved off the dock.
|
|
| This
is a picture of one of the docks at the naval base. All of the squares
are pens housing navy dolphins used for research. As we steamed by,
they put on quite a show for us, jumping and splashing! |
|
| A
fishing boat crossed our bow. The birds and sea lions were following
it as it came in with its catch, hoping to get some free food. |
|
All of the channel markers had a few sea lions hauled out on them,
taking a rest from the water.

Although the West Coast shipping strike has come to an end, the
ports are still backed up. Here is a shot of four ships waiting
in the channel to come into port and unload. They have been there
for days.
