Raul Martinez
Ablebodied Seaman & Ordinary Seaman
R/V Atlantis

Raul Martinez

What is your job on the ship? AB (Ablebodied seaman) & OS (Ordinary Seaman)

How long have you worked on Atlantis? Five years since 1997

Where are you from? Calaya, Guanaguato, Mexico

What is the most unusual thing you have seen on a cruise? In the beginning everything seemed unusual, but now I am so used to it, it seems normal — even the worms!

What's the strangest thing you've ever eaten? Crickets — toasted crickets.

What is the scariest thing that has ever happened to you? Once when I was swimming for a launch, I offered to take the sound-powered phone back to the small boat. I was trying to be nice because it is a pain in the butt to swim because you have to keep your arm and the phone out of the water. So as soon as I got in the water, I saw three sharks hanging around the basket. I jumped back on Alvin to tell the other guy to take the phone, but it was too late. I had to go for it! It was terrifying. The phone got wet!

If you didn't have this job, what would be your next job of choice? Bullfighter

What's the hardest thing you've ever had to endure? When my mother died. The Atlantis had just left Manzanillo, and when we got on station I learned that my mother had had a stroke and was dying. I called and spoke to her, but she couldn't speak to me. It was very difficult.

Where's the coolest place you have ever been? Why? Bottom of the ocean! Thanks to Richard Lutz! He took me down, and we toured many spots. I saw the whole enchilada! For the rest of the trip, all I could say was "wow!" ...And I don't know why people love PB&J. I don't like it, but that day it was the best lunch in the world!
