Peter Thatcher Leonard, Jr.
2nd Mate
R/V Atlantis

Peter Thatcher Leonard, Jr.

What is your job on the ship? Second Mate (a.k.a. troublemaker)

How long have you worked on Atlantis? About one year — real time

Where are you from? Denver, Colorado — born, raised, educated.

What is the most unusual thing you have seen on a cruise? Ball lightning — a flash of light in a cloud, intense, short. Happened twice. Extremely rare. Happened on THIS cruise. Witness to the event is Ken Rand.

What's the strangest thing you've ever eaten? The heart of a cow, liked it; stomach I said no to. I was in Paraguay. Was a health volunteer doing community sanitation.

What is the scariest thing that has ever happened to you? Charged by a bull when I was about 12 — one of the scariest events in my life. This was in Colorado. I didn't do anything to it; it danced around, and I ran away. It sure as heck scared the daylights out of me.

If you didn't have this job, what would be your next job of choice? Britney Spears back-up singer!

What's the hardest thing you've ever had to endure? Life, no really, high school, college. Umm, Definitely college. NO, wait, Coast Guard exam. That was a five-day exam; I studied for two months — 12 hour days. Very intense, but well worth it.

Where's the coolest place you have ever been? Why? Been to 32 different countries so far, but the coolest by far: France! Curaçao (ABC Islands), and Bali, Indonesia, also were REALLY cool. And the other really cool place I like is Cape Town, South Africa — all for their unique attributes.
