DIVE OBJECTIVES BRIEF:

Primary Objective —Reconnaissance of Alvinella sites along transect, sites for ASU chimney unit deployments, and sampling of snow blower features.

BRIDGE/DECK — We plan on an Elevator deployment after dinner.  This is the same unit we deployed last year. Deck has been notified of this request. The site for the drop will be determined during today's dive and sent to the bridge with the dive report.

1) Locate Tubeworm Pillar — survey for Alvinella/small chimneys.

2) If locate Alvinella, take temp./sample — place in cold box.

3) If small chimney, take temp.–collect.

4) Begin transit to Marker 82 and Ty and Io — survey Alvinella.

5) Take temps/sample if available.

6) Survey Alvinella Pillar.

7) Transit to P vent and Bio9 — survey, take temps., collect.

8) Transit to TICA — survey, take temps.

9) Transit to Q vent — survey, take temps.

10) Find small beehive to deploy ASU frying pan.

11) Transit to M vent and Robin's Roost — survey, take temps.

Detailed Instructions:

1) On descent, review  still and video (hand-held and sub) camera operation.

2) Review Nav and target dropping procedure.

3) Test Sipper and temp. probe — ASM?

4) WHITE BALANCE VIDEO.

5) Land west of ASC at latitude of Tubeworm Pillar.

6) Move in and survey all Alvinella colonies from TWP to M vent.

7) Using either Hi-Temp. probe or SIPPER probe, take temps. — RECORD.

8) Survey for small chimney/beehive features — get temp/XY.

9) Survey for snow blowers — take AMS samples — get XY.

Alvinella — DISSR:

1) Examine Alvinella clump (150°C)  for  large accessible tubes w/worms.

2) Take internal temp. of several tubes, record on dive sheet. The avg. temp. inside tubes should be 65°C or greater.  If not, note and proceed.

3) If hot, take  temps. (X6 tubes) and Sipper x4 (different tubes). Draw picture — note time and location on data sheet.

4) Position overhead camera so that it is looking down into DISSR. The other camera  should be recording Alvinella clump.

5)  Move a large clump to the top of the lg. Biobox.  If worms are right size ...

6) Open DISSR — remove plug.

7) Collect 4–6 large (6–8 med.) worms without damaging them. Avoid tube and debris — they take time to sink. Make sure they go down.

8) Use plug to encourage them to sink

9) Need good visuals of worms going into DISSR — note time.

10) Take good still shot/video of worm going into box for Ambion – NOTE.

11) Close DISSR — note on dive summary report sheet.

Alvinella — other:

12) Collect additional Allvinella clump and place in middle Biobox (COLD).

13) Collect a few more Alvinella and place into forward-most Biobox.

14) Take visuals and temps. if necessary.

15) Visualize number collected. BUT DON'T BE GREEDY — if good we will want to return later.

Beehive and Chimneys:

Survey throughout transect for small beehive/chimneys for rest of dive series. Where possible, take temps. and get good video — note time and XY.

16) Find a respectable beehive in the Q vent area for frying pan deployment.

17) Take temp. — top, side, and Bottom. Take SIPPER side and top  — record sample positions on data sheets.

18) Want temp 150–200°C — but not higher.

19) Collect — and place in rear of lg Biobox. Try not to knock down chimney.

20) Take temp. at scar — take Sipper if appropriate temp.

21) Place frying pan on scar — let sit 5 mins. Retake temp. and Sipper.

Snow Blowers:

1) Keep a constant eye out for snow blowers.

2) If locate, position for AMS sampling.

3) Take 1–3 samples from site — with good visuals — still and video.

4) Note XY, heading, time, etc., on data sheet and photo sheet.

5) When surfacing, take remaining AMS samples at intervals.
