Doctor of Philosophy Degree Requirements
(Ph.D. in Marine Studies
with Concentration in Marine Policy)
1. Course Requirements
a. Meet equivalency requirements, that is, have taken and passed with a grade of B or better, graduate courses equivalent to the required courses in the M.M.P. program other than College distribution course and seminar series (See Section 5, Admissions, in Graduate Policy Statement.)
b. Twelve credit hours in a disciplinary concentration. Courses that are required for M.M.P. may not be counted. The concentration program must be approved by the advisor. Three credit hours in Research and Methodology.
c. Three credit hours in Marine Policy Seminar. This does not apply to students who fulfilled requirement during M.M.P.; Individuals matriculated as regular students in the Marine Policy Program must register for MAST 873 (Marine Policy Seminar) in semesters during the tenure of their resident status in the Program. The Program expects students in residence who have satisfied this requirement to register for the Marine Policy Seminar, to attend and participate in Seminar sessions during the duration of their resident sustaining status in the program.
d. One course outside of her/his home program (minimum of 3 credits). This may include one of the specially designed introductory courses or a more advanced course. Students may not test out of these courses. This does not apply to students who fulfilled requirement during M.M.P.
e. Introductory courses outside of this program include: MAST 601 Introduction to Oceanography (3) MAST 627 Marine Biology (3)
f. Minimum of 21 graduate credits (not to include research/dissertation credits).
g. Dissertation: 9 credits
h. Additional graduate-level course work as determined by advisory committee.
2. Other Requirements
a. Advisory committee selection and dissertation proposal (to be completed by the end of the student's third semester). Committee approves proposal.
b. Ph.D. qualifying examination
c. Defense of dissertation.
Master of Marine Policy Degree Requirements
Requirements for the Degrees
All students in the Master's of marine policy program are required to complete 39 graduate credits. A course outside of the Marine Policy Program and the student's area of concentration is also required. Students pursuing this degree must write a thesis. Students may bypass the Master's degree and work directly toward the Ph.D. upon petition. Requirements for the Ph.D. degree are similar to those for the Master's degree, but are more intensive. Written and oral qualifying examinations are required before students are admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree. All students in the Master's of marine management program are required to complete at least 31 graduate course credits over the period of fall, winter and spring semesters of one year. There is no thesis required for this degree.
Master of Marine Policy (M.M.P)

Ph.D. in Marine Sciences
Concentration in Marine Policy
Required courses:
Completion of M.M.P. or equivalent work at another university or M.M.P. bypass.
